Originally known as Soedun, meaning lying down ox, Soesokkak Estuary is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Seogwipo. Soesokkak, a wide and calm slow-flowing river, is the Hyodoncheon stream’s mouth – the area where the ocean meets fresh water. In literal translation, “soe” means ox; “so” is “pool of water”; and “kkak” is “the end”.

Soesokkak Estuary is surrounded with tall pine trees. Past volcanic eruptions resulted to magnificent cliffs formed from lava flows which line the estuary. With the deep blue ocean water, the scenery in the area is absolutely awe-inspiring. As a matter of fact, Soesokkak Estuary is one of the attractions in Jeju Island with the most beautiful and romantic scenery. As such, this is a perfect place to bring your special someone with you.

Soesokkak is renowned for its Teu rides. The “teu” is a flat wooden boat which has been around for centuries, primarily used by people as a means of transport to cross the estuary. It is pulled by a long and sturdy rope, strung from each bank of the river. The best way to get a great view of the lovely scenery in the area is to take a relaxing Teu ride across Soesokkak Estuary’s clear waters.

The estuary is situated on Mount Halla’s southern area, a place famous for its tangerine. As a matter of fact, the scent of the fruit constantly fills the area, something which fascinates visitors. There are many other popular destinations in the vicinity of Soesokkak Estuary, like the Jusang Jeolli Cliffs, Cheonjeyeon Falls and Jungmun Resort – all these attractions can be visited on the same day.
